Installment 2: How to Get Started

The easiest way to clean your bicycle is to place it into a bicycle stand. A good alternative is to use your car bike rack, provided it’s the type that mounts by the rear bumper (no sense standing on the roof of your SUV!). If neither is available, don’t worry; you can still effectively clean your bicycle by securely leaning it against any sturdy surface (e.g., a tree, fence, garage, et al). Remember, most single-speed or non-freewheel bikes will not allow you to backpedal to clean the chain; the use of a kickstand can interfere as well. In many cases, the rear wheel will need to be raised to allow normal pedaling. Avoid flipping the bike and resting it on its saddle and handlebars: this allows too many opportunities to allow water to enter parts of the bike that are not protected by the bicycle design.

Take a look at this diagram, which shows the parts of a typical, traditional road bicycle. While bicycles differ, from disc brakes to suspension systems, most employ the basic parts shown here. As you can imagine, dirt, dust, sand, road grime, and salt spray, depending on riding and storage conditions can find their way into any part of your bicycle, so careful inspection is always an important step.
